it's D.Grayman and I don't remember if it actually is European themed or not
It was but there were a Japanese character and a Chinese heroine, and it spent quite an amount of time wandering in Asia

smh, can't believe matome and 5ch aren't Teamates.

That does make sense though. When the series was first revealed, I thought the biggest obstacle for it being successful was going to be the fact it was clearly European themed even if it's technically not in Europe. I can't remember the last time a series with that setting succeeded in WSJ (off the top of my head, it's D.Grayman and I don't remember if it actually is European themed or not). And as someone who really likes We Never Learn but is way more meh on Syd, I felt similar about the characters. I realize the girls aren't the most complex characters ever, but they still felt like there was more to the WNL cast that didn't revolve around Nariyuki or their "gimmick", even only 20 chapters in. Even in the special chapter alone, the WNL cast ran circles around the Syd Craft crew in terms of being funny and memorable, which was obviously opposite the intended result!
I also noticed the special chapter caught a lot of reception from WNL readers, none of which eventually transferred to Syd. Syd's probably gonna be a heartbreaking case for me to do a post-mortem on, but it'd be interesting to dissect its failings as compared to WNL and muse about what it had or did not have to lose the engagement of the Japanese audience. One of my running theories is the lack of a tsukkomi to ground the cast, since everyone had one brain cell to share at a time. When everyone's a joke, no one is. This would also fit into why foreign engagement is more positive compared to the vitriolic Japanese reception, since English-speaking humor is a lot more rapid fire in terms of gags. I can also talk about how romcom loving readers, especially harems, are extremely cult-like in how they want school settings. I dabble in eroge, so I have a lot to say on this matter.

But with a lotta cushions, there's still room to turn it back around. Turning it around before June or July would take an absolute miracle though, when the foundation of the series is already fucked.

In my own personal opinion, everything I love most about Undead Unluck was not really showcased or exemplified until a good 30 chapters in at the bare minimum. When the series first kicked off the main draw was just “this guy can regenerate it and uses it in extreme and grotesque ways!” and the series in it’s first 5-10 chapters really didn’t have the love for it’s cast that it grew to have. The fact that when we start the series we almost immediately kill Void with no regard, Shen seems ambivalent to it, and even though they spin a wholesome sort of angle on killing Gina the Union isn’t heavily affected by her loss outside of the initial anger from some. Contrast this to the whole second half of the story with each character being cherished like a beloved child, and it’s like looking at 2 different canvases.

As much as I love UU, I was fully not deeply locked in for at least the first 30 chapters, and even the big twist with Billy betraying them didn’t feel super impactful for me outside of Tatiana’s reaction to it since the series wasn’t in much of a habit of building our relationship with the characters like that. Certainly by the time Summer came around I was a lot more engaged, but that takes a while, and while Fall had some good emotional stuff as well that and Andy’s flashback are the only 2 big things the anime had to latch onto for big emotional pull with feeling for the characters on a deep level, and that’s assuming the casual viewer watched the whole season.

Technically I haven’t seen the anime so I can’t speak to the quality or anything, but Undead Unluck is just one of several series in the modern era that have a lot of beauty to them but are held back by not having very strong or very different starts that don’t keep casual audiences engaged long enough to see the full beauty of the series.
This is pretty fair criticism. I know it's outside material, but the first light novel does address the whole Gina and Shen thing in a better way, where Shen does acknowledge to Mui that he really was a piece of shit that only looked at people in terms of whether they were strong or not. The fast pace of the series was certainly a double edged sword, even if it did make for an exciting read.

I was able to pick up volume 26, 27 and the third light novel this weekend from my local bookstore that sells Japanese products. This is the first long(ish) series that I've fully collected in Japanese, and the English release should be finished by the end of next year if my calculations are correct.

I do have to admit that volume 27 does bum me out a little.

When the last chapter came out in Shonen Jump, the official translator translated one of Tozuka's sketches, and he implied that he would write a longer farewell in the volume release. However, the only thing that's really here is in the comment at the beginning of the book, where after describing what he hopes for the readers to enjoy about Andy and Fuuko's final struggle, he says:

To everyone who read this work, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Sick, wicked sick!

I realize this may come off as greedy, considering that he added 30 pages of epilogue, but I would've liked to have an additional page with his thoughts about ending the series, thanking staff....you know, something like that. I've seen it in the final books for Gintama and Mission Yozakura Family.

Oh well, it is what it is. There's the 1 hour special to look forward to, and that's it for now.

Oho, emulating Blue Box, I see? If Ono did indeed have a stint under Miura, this would make sense. And it’s just enough to separate itself from Blue Box despite the obvious influence.
I was actually thinking of the Nisekoi version with Marika getting sick the day of and Onodera getting hurt during rehearsal, but it is basically a harem romcom staple trope so you can find at least 3 different variations of it.

Thinking about it though, if Ono is a former Miura assistant, I wonder how they haven't put Blue Box on a volume wraparound yet. I don't think it's a horrible sign or anything that they haven't done that (I generally think if they give a series a recommendation, it's because they aren't sure if it will get noticed without one), but it felt like having Miura recommend it while the anime was airing would be the easiest cross promotion ever.

Mod suddenly posted a lot of official rules.... damn, what drama did i miss ??
No drama, just something that was supposed to be done for a while and few things keeping happening just helped.

I see no one talks about it:
Who guys do you think will finish the series in the next week?
Two series are starting, so there will be two series ending....

I think Astro and Blue box will be the ones leaving the magazine

Anyway, I am really enjoying Embers. It's a mix of Kuroko's basketball and Eyeshield 21/ Haikyuu
Hoping it increase its ranking. But with Jump's football curse I am not too sure it will survive

Astro Royale is the only one I can see ending, considering the situation in the series, the shortened number of pages in volume 5 and the lack of colour pages for weeks.

It’s still too early for Blue Box. I would hate for the series to end without touching on the other two potential couples.

Blue Box probably still has 30+ chapters left, between the rest of the badminton stuff, going up until graduation and the side couples.

This week's Hima-ten was very fluffy and sweet, it's a very casual and natural way to highlight Himari's development. Yet part of what makes it even more special is that slightly sour flavour of how Honoka was ditched for this. Fate guided things to where they should be. This mix is something I always enjoy in romance, not NTR, but almost there. It's a good place to be. Thank you, Hima-ten.

Issue 20:

1. Nue's Exorcist
2. Hima-ten!
3. Roboco
